Reflexology
What is it and how does it work?
Reflexology is the therapeutic massage of the reflex points in the feet, although it can be just as easily applied to the hands. It is believed that the reflex points "mirror" the organs of the body, so specific areas of the feet relate to specific areas of the body. For example, the big toes relate to the head, the inside edge of the foot relates to the spine and so on.
The most useful function of reflexology is in the relaxation/stress reduction that it offers clients. It is a great tool for re-establishing "homeostasis" or balance within the body, and when the body is relaxed, it is in the best position to heal itself.
It is non-invasive, and suitable for most stress-related conditions and ages.
Reflexologists do not claim and never should claim to diagnose conditions. If you have an undiagnosed condition, it is always best to seek medical advice. However, reflexology can indicate areas of tension/congestion within the body.
There is evidence of some form of therapeutic work to the feet dating back 2,500 years ago to Egyptian, Chinese and Native American cultures.
Modern reflexology stems from the pioneering work of Dr Henry Head and later Dr Fitzgerald and Dr Selby in the early years of the last century. They found that by exerting pressure on various parts of the hands and feet they were able to achieve anaesthesia in parts of the face. Since they were ear, nose and throat specialists they used this instead of traditional anaesthetic. Zone therapy was born. Work continued through the endeavours of Eunice Inghams, who plotted all the reflexes and drew the "maps" from which many are taken today, is considered to be the "mother" of modern reflexology.
There is still much debate as to how reflexology works. In the 1890s Henry Head's research seemed to prove a neurological relationship between the skin and the internal organs. There also seems to be relationship between the chemical and subtle energies of the body, the same energy which is utilised in acupuncture, shiatsu and Ayurvedic traditions.
At Essential Holistic Health, the style used is a universal method, but alongside this "Precision" or linking techniques are combined to reach a deeper level for clients.
Generally the treatment should not be painful. However, where reflexes are congested, lack energy or are out of balance, they may feel tender while being worked on. As the reflexes become energised and clearer, this will become less so.

Reflexology is profoundly relaxing and nurturing for clients. It appears to offer a deep sense of emotional support and caring, more so than massage can offer, and in this sense is truly holistic ~ that is, it works on the physical, emotional, mental and even spiritual levels.
It assists clients in being able to get a better perspective on life, often promoting lifestyle changes that amaze clients and family.
It is a great tool in preventing imbalance in the first place, and stimulating the body's natural healing ability.
Where any systems of the body are over-stimulated, it calms them, when they are sluggish, it stimulates them. It creates balance and harmony within ~ homeostasis.
This has got to be one of the number 1 tools for stress relief, executive burnout, poor energy levels and general feelings of "being out of balance". For many, just a few sessions will help them get back on track with their lives.

What will happen during a treatment?
During the session a full consultation of your medical history, lifestyle and diet will be taken. If you are taking medication prescribed by your GP, you might find it useful to make a list. You might also wish to speak with your GP/consultant before treatment as, for some conditions, special care needs to be taken.
You will be asked to lie on the couch, shoes and socks removed. Your feet will be cleansed, and a light lotion (which may contain essential oils) will be applied with gentle massaging strokes. When the feet are relaxed, the whole of the feet are treated. Warm blankets can aid the feelings of comfort and relaxation.
You are free to ask any questions during treatment, and often clients will unburden issues which are troublesome for them. Some are quiet throughout.
Following treatment, aftercare advice will be given and any questions answered.
